Scope:

September 2008 saw the beginning of the Lutino Project; a child-centered and multi-sectoral program aimed at facilitating safe and sustained recovery for children and youth as they transition out of displacement contexts in Kitgum District. The first phase of the project – a child-and youth-focused assessment – was was completed in January 2009. The Uganda program now seeks to recruit an Editorial and Information Volunteer to prepare the dissemination of the assessment findings to the communities in Kitgum as well as to stakeholders both in Ugada and globally.

Responsibilities:

Under supervision and guidance of the Project Coordinator, the volunteer will:
Restructure and edit the assessment report in preparation for publication:

This includes but is not limited to:
- Ensuring consistency in the level of interpretative analysis across the report sections.
- Reducing the length and improving the quality of writing of the report and including relevant photographs, maps and graphics.
- Gathering feedback from IRC global Technical Advisors and including this in the report where necessary.
- Produce a 4-5 page summary as well as presentation materials for dissemination to stakeholders in Kitgum district and at the national level.
- Develop a plan with timelines and budget for sharing the assessment findings with the communities in Layamo and Mucwini, including:
- Assisting in coordination and consultation with the relevant District and Local authorities.
- Producing appropriate presentation materials.
- Assisting the Lutino project team in implementation of the plan.
The volunteer will work closely with the Kampala-based Communications Intern, as well as with the relevant Kitgum-based sector managers.

Requirements:

- A degree in journalism, communications, sociology, international development or another relevant field of study.
- Excellent oral, written, editing and presentation skills.
- Previous experience working overseas in a post-conflict setting or relevant research experience is a plus, as is a sound knowledge of the return and recovery process in Northern Uganda.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented.
- Cultural sensitivity.
- Strong IT competencies in MS Word, Power Point and Publisher.
