MTN Uganda is the leading telecommunications company in Uganda, providing payphones, fixed lines, fax/data, Internet and mobile services. The company is currently expanding and is seeking to recruit a suitable, qualified person for the following position.
Legal Advisor (1 Position)
The position reports to the Senior Manager, Legal.
The main purpose of the job is to advise the company on commercial, contractual and legal matters, as well as provide
legal advice to employees on company related issues of a legal nature, and ensure a good working relationship with the regulatory bodies.


The prime responsibilities for this position are:
• Advise the company on commercial, contractual and legal terms.
• Provide legal advice to employees on commercial related issues of a legal nature.
• Draft contracts/agreements for the company.
• Represent the company at meetings and negotiations.
• Contribute to the development of governing company policies in line with the laws of Uganda.
• Ensure that governing policies and procedures are followed, i.e. procurement processes, disciplinary procedures etc
• Act as a liaison between the company and the company's external legal advisors and other corporate bodies in Uganda.
• Follow up on legal issues, litigation and the judicial processes.
• Deal with the day-to-day legal administrative work.
• Provide company secretarial functions to MTN Uganda's subsidiary companies, i.e. Publicom and/or village phone.
• Any other obligation or duty the company may in its discretion determine.


Job requirement

The applicant must possess an Undergraduate Honours degree in Law (LLB) and a diploma in legal practice with a current practicing certificate. The applicant must also posses an advance professional qualification or evidence of significant study towards the achievement of such qualification in telecommunications law, or be a member of a professional body such as ICSA.
Previous experience required: at least two years professional experience and minimum of one year as an advocate in a busy commercial law practice, or as an in-house counsel in a major corporate organisation, preferably a telecommunications operator.
The individual must: possess excellent organisational, management and planning skills; have 'extensive experience in commercial law; have excellent negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills; experience in dealing with government institutions and regulated industries; have good knowledge and experience in the legal field; be a strong team player of unquestionable integrity; be able to work under pressure and manage time effectively; be able to interpret legal information, solve problems and make decisions effectively.
