Dean of the Faculty of the Built Environment Job Vacancy: Uganda Martyrs University

Introduction

Applications are invited for appointment to the position of Dean of the Faculty of the Built Environment.

The Faculty of the Built Environment was established in 2000 as the Faculty of Building Technology and Architecture, in response to the need for well-informed and capable design and building professionals.

The Faculty currently offers two degree programmes: a three year Bachelor of Environmental Design (B.Envi.Des.), and a two year professional Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) programme.

The programmes were recently Validated by the Uganda Society of Architects, and accredited by the National Council for Higher Education as meeting the academic requirements for registration as an architect in Uganda.

The Faculty is currently in the process of development a Master of Landscape Architecture (M.Land.Arch.) (professional) programme as well as a Master of Environmental Design M.Envi.Des. post professional programme.

The Faculty aims to be the best architectural school in Eastern Africa, and seeks to provide its students with an education of the highest quality.

The Faculty currently has 83 students with a first year intake of 25-30 students. Facilities in the Faculty include a Computer Suite with workstations running MacO, a Materials Testing Laboratory, as well as a design consultancy, dESIGN@UMU.

Professional Profile

The Dean of the Faculty of the Built Environment must be someone who can capture the confidence of professional and industry groups, management, staff and students, and who can steer the Faculty through the demands currently facing tertiary education in Uganda and East Africa.

The position of Dean is a management and leadership position, with a teaching quantum.

As such the successful applicant will have:

A background in architecture, engineering;
A proven teaching record within related areas;
An understanding of the essential elements required to deliver quality education to students;

An ability to manage and inspire a range of committed educators with diverse professional backgrounds;
An ability to manage resources to ensure that the practical needs of the staff and students are met;
An ability to interact on a national and international level to give substance to a shared vision for the future of the Faculty.
Specifically, the qualifications and experience to manage the Faculty include:

Proven skills and experience in managing people;
Sufficient academic/educational background to lead staff through the development of courses and programmes to meet the needs of future graduates (A minimum of a Masters degree);
Qualifications and experience in a discipline related to the Faculty.
Experience in, or a desire to work in Developing Countries.
In addition she/he will have demonstrated experience, knowledge and/or skills that ensure ability to:

Plan, organise, delegate, administer and control Faculty activities to meet quality standards and deadlines;
Lead entrepreneurial activities, including inspiring people to think and act innovatively;
Develop and implement strategy to achieve medium to long-term goals;
Manage and be accountable for resource utilisation;
Lead, team-build and draw together a range of professionals into a harmonious team;
Responsible To

Deans are directly responsible to the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs (DVC, AA), and will liaise with the Registrar in the execution of their duties.
Primary Objectives

The major responsibilities of the Dean of the Faculty will be:

Be the Administrative Head of the Faculty;

To undertake the on-going administration, planning and management of a Teaching and Research Faculty;
To develop and lead an effective team;
To participate in the teaching programmes of the Faculty;
Advise on the need for new appointments in the Faculty;
See to it that members fulfil their administrative and teaching duties;
Ensure timetables operate as required;
Chair the Faculty/Examination Board;
Be the spokesperson of the Faculty on administrative matters and promote scholarship and prestige of the Faculty and the University;
Be a scholar continuing with teaching and research in her/his academic field, guide students and staff and ensure high standards of scholarship;
Advise the DVC, AAon issues concerning the Faculty;
Submit matters to Senate or other Authorities for approval/information;
Work in close collaboration with the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the University for all matters concerning Handbooks, Prospectuses and all other publicity information;
Work in close collaboration with the Registrar's Office for lecture time-tables, and exam time-tables; ensure that exam papers and course work mark sheets are collected by Friday of the Reading Week and Final assessment marks one week after the Final Assessment; and be responsible for keeping these records up to date and for all other matters related to the administration of the Faculty;
Oversee the design and development of new programmes and qualifications at certificate, diploma and degree levels;
Oversee the development of the curriculum and subject development and/or modules that have-wide applications;
In conjunction with senior staff, ensure that the necessary approvals and accreditation from the relevant professional bodies are made;
To establish/maintain links with relevant educational, professional, and industrial groups for advice and support;
To work with faculty in the building of a strong identity for Faculty, and University;
Take on any other duty that from time to time may be required from time to time.
